The calculation of Tax Freedom Day determines the day of the year when, on average, we citizens stop paying taxes to the administration and we actually start working for ourselves. Depending on the tax burden, which is different in every Spanish autonomous community and in every country, the date varies. So, in Navarra the date is set on the 26 th of April, while the national average is the 21 st of May.
In other words, in 2007 the average Spanish citizen starts working for the State from the 1 st of January, and not until well into the month of May could they enjoy their earnings for themselves.
This site contains a personal Tax Freedom Day calculator, with which each citizen who pays their taxes in Navarra can individually calculate their own Tax Freedom Day. This site also offers average data of Navarra, Spain, and other countries of the European Union that will serve to situate the local figures in their proper context.
Aim
Although many citizens have a general idea of how many taxes they are paying the State, calculating Tax Freedom Day allows them to be more conscious of the tax burden to which they are subjected.
This is the main objective of this campaign: to sensitise the population, especially in Navarra, of the amount of taxes they are paying the administration. Furthermore, it is intended that citizens are made aware that public services are not free, but are financed with every taxpayer's money, who are the ones generating wealth.
Even if it seems quite obvious, it is never in excess to remind the population that the money political powers are using to carry out different activities comes from the tax contributions of all the citizens. The ensuing evaluation of whether said taxes are employed well or not should be made by these very citizens.
Prime mover
The campaign is promoted by Institución Futuro , a liberal think tank situated in Navarra, which designs and promotes a better socioecomic future for Navarra's civil society. To this end, it analyses public policy and presents innovative proposals through its research and activities.
Institución Futuro is convinced that through this initiative, Spanish citizens, especially the Navarrese, will be more and better informed about fiscal matters. Any measure that allows that society dispose of more and better information on such matters is always welcome, and as in this particular case, promoted by Institución Futuro.
